Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the attack left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
